Inner wheel bearing on an H - What a Job!

Got a mild surprise when I pulled the left axle housing off the frame -- inner wheel bearing on my H was shot. 1/2 the ball retainer cage was sitting in shreds at the bottom of the housing, and 1 ball was split in two (about 3 others has been ground-up). Got a replacement wheel bearing ($59.00) but had a DEVIL of a time getting the old one out. Those bearing races are SO HARD that practically nothing would cut through. Finally managed to get the balls out by cutting away the outer race cavity with a tiny cut-off wheel on my Dremel tool, then coaxed the inner race off the axle. I made a tool out of a 9/16" cap head bolt (half the cap cut off) and a sheet of stock. Banged on it for 1/2 an hour and got it out.

New bearing went right in. Not that I plan on doing that again, but what would a better approch have been to removing that inner wheel bearing? My local IH dealer told me just to whack on it until it broke. I feared breaking the cast iron housing, so didn't hit it.

Still can't believe how strong that metal was.

Did you check the right side yet?

Right side was just fine. Left outer wheel bearing was fine too.

I suspect that the bearing got fouled by the crud that was the oil bath, or that it had a ball bearing failure that progressed. Even then, there were only 4 balls affected, and the axle continue to rotate freely and true.

There are some butt kicking bearings on a H.
I am trying to replace the clutch pilot bearing on my H.
Broke the arms on my bearing puller.
Pounded on it off and on for 2 days with no luck. Trying to bust it up and take it out in peices.
Today I did get the inner race out. I took my stick welder and turned up the voltage and burnt it out. Then the balls came out.
Outer race is stuck like it is part of the fly wheel.
I tried the welder trick again. Figured I could run a bead inside the outer race and shrink it to remove.
Nope, all I did was weld the outer race to the fly wheel.... ARG!!
SO off to the hardware store to get a die grinder.
Its coming out of there one way or the other. I will try grinding it in half to get it out. Then of course fix the welding thing :-)

I used about $4.00 worth of cut-off wheels on my Dremel tool to cut the race. The nice thing about those is the size -- about 2" in diameter, so you can get in small spaces and control the cut. If you don't twist them, they cut well and don't break.

Good luck to you. I fully understand and appreciate your situation. The only thing left on my "to do" list is to replace 4th and 5th gear, as they appear worn, and now is the time to do it. So out comes the differential, and that will give me the chance to replace the brake housing seals at the same time.

Then, the great rebuilding project starts, and I'll be twisting bolts for a month of Sundays.

Hi, yes you can shatter a bearing race with a hammer but you better be wearing good protective clothing, including eye protection. This is not the preferred method, use a puller or heat and cold method. I have personal experience with a piece of shattered bearing going thru a flannel shirt and an inch into my body and it is still there today after 20 years.

I learned my lesson, DO NOT SHATTER BEARINGS WITH HAMMER.

It apprears that LOCAL dealer has never seen a bearing race shatter, what a foolish thing to tell someone. I supose he said to use a claw hammer to.

you are so right. I have broken lots of races with a hammer but I NEVER advise anyone else to do it. Men have been killed by smalll splinters piercing their vitals. A better route is the fire wrench. The hard steel burns much easier than cast so you can hardly hurt the housing. (I have burnt out hundreds of bolts and saved the threads)
