Horsepower hint from model number

It seems with many of the older, numbered IH tractor models, you can guess the approximate horsepower from the model number by replacing the last two digits with a 0. 1066 -> 100, 656 -> 60, 340 -> 30, etc. There are a few where it is a little off, like the 350 is actually 42 horsepower, but I've used this rule of thumb to get a mental image of IH models I haven't seen. This little rule breaks down with the Hydro models and the later 3xxx, 4xxx, etc. models (which by the way no one around here seems to have--its like in the 1960's someone threw a switch and any tractors around here newer than that are John Deeres--but no shortage of older IHs though.) Short of just 'knowing' the IH models, is there any rule to help relate the Hydros and late 4 digit models to their horsepower?

That would explain the power produced from the IH 674 I once had 4= number of cylinders 67 = rabbit power.

I'd always heard that the 806, for example, was 80 horsepower, 6 cylinders....the 1206, 120 hp, 6 cylindars, the 856, 85 horse, 6 cylindars...same would apply to any of the post 1965 or so Farmalls ending in a "6" or a "4"..like 574...57 horse, 4 cylindars...656, 65 horse, 6 cylindars....makes sense to me, but may not be quite right...1466, 146 horse, 6 cylinders....Cmore

It doesn't work with the 100 130 or 140. They had 23 hp.

OK, so what clues does the model number hold for a Hydro 186 or a 3788? Is the H186 a 6cyl? The 3788 is 8cyl? What about horsepower?

The only V8's were 1468 1568 the 100 hydro was 100 HP 186 Hydro 100 HP 3488 was about 100 HP Hydro Don't know what the 88 syood for but they were the 30 series and the 3 big ones at the time 50 52 54 were 50 series. The 806 was 94 HP the 1206 did stand for 112 HP but that was a low ball. Don't think you can do the rul of thump thing.
