Is it possible to run a late model brushhog or rough cut mower on a 1946 A model with PTO?? As most of you know the A's don't have the 3pt hitch set-up. I have a lot of field to mow and have been unable to find a sickle-bar for this model. Someone told me I could run a rough-cut or brush-hog mower. Anyone have ideas? sources near VT? one to sell? Thanks

Did you readjust the self adjusters before you reassembled the brakes?

I have a Farmall Super A, with hydraulics, and bought a 3pt. hitch conversion kit from Farm & Family, who is no longer in business, but the kit should still be available, as it was not manufactured by Farm & Family. To use the kit, you must have the existing lift arms and shaft that are bolted to the fenders and have hydraulics. I can give you more information if you wish.

Hey Bill,
Just get a drag type mower and hook it on the drawbar. It doesn't have to be a 3Pt mower to do what you have to do does it???? Drag types are just about a dime a dozen and then you won't be putting weight stress on a tractor that wasn't designed for it. Also be sure to get a overrunning clutch for the pto as well. No fun getting up in a corner and not being able to stop.

Hey Gary, DO you have a make or model for th e drag type mower? Also, can you clue me in on this "over-running" clutch? Is it adapted to the PTO? or is it a feature I could get on the brush-hog mower? Thanks

Hey Bill,
First order of business "overrunning clutch", this is an attachment that goes on the pto shaft coming out of the rear of the tractor. It has a ratchet type system in it that lets the mower keep turning with the transmission pto stopped. Works kinda like a ratchet you use in your socket set. Farm supply stores should have them and they run in the 50 to 60 dollar range(give or take)
As far as make or model of mowers, drag type mowers should be fairly plentifull most everywhere. Servis makes a good one and Bush Hog, Deere, and so on. I know of about at least a dozen sitting around my neck of the woods. Where are you located? Se

I'm not familiar with what you are calling a "rough cut" mower. But if it is the same as a Brush Hog then you should be OK but be sure and keep it on the small size (nothing over 5').

GOOD LUCK

Thanks Big John. I read on an earlier page that the PTO shaft after 1941 should be 1 3/8 inch, which is pretty much universal, if not I could probably get an adapter. Thanks for the idea, I wasn't sure if I could try it (still a rookie)at all this.

If you need the adapter you can get an ORC and 1 1/8"x1 3/8" adapter in 1 unit.

His is a picture of my 1942 B with a quickly made bracket, that hooks the 2 pins of the 3 point. Not pretty but it worked. Also, I am using a run on clutch that Hal was talking about.

Bill, The PTO shaft on my 42 A is 1 1/4" the size on my 49 Super A is 1 3/8". If you have the smaller dia you can buy an adapter.
