Just parked my 53 super M next to my 39 F20 and was comparing them.About the only thing's I would of kept from the F20 were the brake locks ( foot brakes) and the bell housing, would of been a lot easier changing the clutch on the SM with a F20 style bell housing. Other than that I'd take the SM any day. What do you think.

One often quoted plus for the ol' F-20 (depending on your tires) was higher crop clearence- it was a major issue of debate within IH when they were talking about the switch from the F-20 to the M.

The F20 was a good tractor in it's day but by 1939 it was sadly outdated. The M was one of the best tractors ever built; by anyone. If IH would have been paying attention the Super M would have had 3 point hitch and the 400 would have had the new 6 cylinder motor that came out in the 560 and John deere would be out of bussiness today.

The letter series was clearly an advancement in tractor evolution compared to the F series. Especially on an operators stand point. Don't believe me, try driving one of each all day and see what you feel like at the end of the day and see how much you got done. The letter series had battery start, lights, hydraulics, and raod gear all of which were merely after market products on the F-series. I myself would rather work on the F-series. They are just hands down easier to work on. In my opinion IHC started loosing ground when they come out with that darn TA that wouldn't stick and was always going out. Up untill then they were sitting on top of all competition. Sure, that 3-point hitch should of been standard when it first come out, but Ford and Ferguson wasn't exactly making tractors comparable with the M in size at that time. I haven't been around the Deers much to know there ailments, but I always thought that John Deere hung onto there two cylinder dream to long. Well, I have probably said to much already so I'll hang it up.

If IH would have put the 6 cyl motor on the 400 they would have been out of business sooner. The 560 was the bigest piece of junk IHC ever made. Spent more time in the shop than in the field.

Only had 1. First year they were out and learned our leason after having to rent a tractor to farm with because the TA went out and tore up rear end4 times in first year. Changed to Case as soon as we could. Heard IH changed something in the rear end to solve the problem but had already run us and most of the neighbors off to a different brand by then. If you have 2 of them you either bought them in the later years of manufacture or bought them used after someone else had them fixed as even IH would tell people that they had bearing problems with the 60 series tractor. Just like they had problems with the W-9's

Could be, but IH still wouldn't have put in a stronger rear end, and then it would have been 400's that broke instead of 560's. One of IH's problems was rushing untested new products to market, then blaming the engineers who were begging for more time. If IH would have licensed fast hitch to Deere like Deere asked them to, fast hitch would be the standard, not 3 point, then maybe IH would still be in business.

i am a big fan of the 60 series tractors the were a very good series i mean i love them and i am only 15 but have driven just about every tractor made and i think the best ones are 460',560's H's & M's.the 560 broke the first yr. or so only in areas where there was little to no wheel slip and that took and busted the bull gear so IH put in a bigger rear and better gears the 560 had almost the same rear as the 450 and the 460 had a rear similar to a 400. trust me on this i own a 460 & a 560. and i have my facts right because my grandfather and great grandfath sold tractors rangin from the f series up until the 460's & 560's

Squence of these models was H, Super H, 300, 350, 460. Then M, Super M, Super MTA, 400, 450, 560. Therefore the rear end in a 460, was similar to the 350, not the 400. The rear in the 560 was similar to the 400/450. Think the 560 had more problems than the 460.
