Well I ordered the valves and guides for my W-4 and figured I might as well pull the pistons and check the rings as long as I have to wait for the parts.
What should the rings and oil seal look like, so I will know if they need to be replaced or not?

Can I reused them if they look ok? Should I hone the cylinders?

Bob

Bob, DO NOT! hone the cylinders if you don't replace the rings. The W4 has a sleeved engine so you don't have to worry about oversize etc. Since you have the engine apart anyway I would replace the rings and hone the cylinders though. You have to buy the Gaskets anyhow and in Canada the rings are only about $60, in the States should be less. They should be availlable at a good auto parts store or definetly at your IH dealer.

if you place a ring in the cylinder without the piston the ends should nearly touch. Rings are cheep, I go ahead and replace if you have it apart anyway. Yes, the cylinders need honed to break the glaze. You might be able to borrow one of those wire brush hones from your auto parts store.

There are a few things to consider before swapping out rings, pistons, etc...First you must determine if they are original size, i.e. have the cylinders been bored oversize etc...There are clearances to be measured, etc...
Firstly you could check your compression, if compression is up to spec. and the cylinder walls don't look scored, then you should be OK. Try this link for engine work fundamentals.

Thanks for all the replies, The cylinders are 3 3/8, so they are over bored sleves. There is no ridge at the top of the bore and the walls look good. The head gasket even lookes new. The valves have these little rubber o rings on the stems that I think are supposed to stop oil from going down the guide. They are not in the parts manual. The guids have lots of room in them. I think the bottom end and pistons and sleves were done and heads just bandaided. There is no detectable movement in the piston itself. I might take a gamble and just do the head. I must say, I usualy am not too lucky!

Thankyou for all the help, That link to rebuilds is great!!
