Put on a new rebuilt injector pump and rebuilt injectors, On an 85 degree day had to use glow plugs and almost started, when pulled and started runs like a dream, any suggestions to as what is wrong and what to look for as to why this thing does not start easier, could it be valves or other, Thanks in advance for any help you can offer
Mike

Did you try it after you got it stsrted by pulling it with starter? I have had my 460 about 27 years hold glow plugs a couple of mins. then start cranking still holding glow plugs and after it starts you will have to hold them until it will stay running [difference between 236 eng and 282] mine always starts on 4 then progresses to all 6 even right after a overhaul. Very smooth running eng. mine will pull left and right New Holland rakes all day on 1/2 gal per hr. a smaller gas tractor won't do that

We had problems with our D282 not wanting to start(706)..... ..Just bought it this spring so haven't used it in the cold yet. I glow plug ours for about a min..... ...Crank it some..... .glow plug it some more(min and a half)..... .And it usually goes. Once it is running it stays running until we are 100% done for the day, since it sips fuel. Someone on the Red Power has a 656U and said the book recommends you hold the glow plugs while cranking and for acouple seconds after the engine starts..... .....I tried this method on ours and it works extremely well. I only do that when it is in the 50's or 60's..... ..Above that I don't think it is needed.

My 656D starts right up by just holding the glow plugs for about 20-30 seconds before cranking. Once it is warm, I can shut it down for a while and don't need them at all unless it has cooled down completly. I'm in the same boat as TP though, i just got it this spring and haven't used it in the winter yet. The book for mine says to hold them on for 1 min. above 32 deg, 1 1/2 min below 32 deg.

MGM The first thing that people do not understand is that this engine is designed to use the glow plugs for staring, that meens all the time. On an 85 degree day you should have to use the glow plugs some. Having said that the glow plugs must be good, this forum has talked about this before and I say one can not be sure about the glow plug being good for sure unless you can see it get hot so that meens take them out and test. I hope you tested them when you had the injectors out. If the engine is in good shap it should start with 4 good plugs in warm weather. If the glow plugs are all good you could have low compression, a diesel must have good compression to start. Many guys on this forum say they have a hard time starting this engine after the pump was off 460 560 656 706, if the is in good shap as yours should be I never had trouble getting them to start, you due need a good head of fuel in the tank so it will bleed ok. With all the D282 I worked with I only remember one that would start on a hot day with out using the glow plugs but it took some cranking so do not advise it. Hope this helps

One thing to remember is that no matter how hot the day, you need to use glow plugs to get 460/560s to start, not so much a flaw as a fact of life. We never used either on ours, just a block heater in the winter and about 3 minutes on the glow plug butten year round. Since it ran so well once it did start, are all your glow plugs working?

Hi, sounds like timing is to slow. Another indication of timing being to slow it a lot of Diesel slobber in muffler or running down the exhaust manifold.
I am not fimilar with injection pump on 460 but when you changed it was there an adjustment on the timing gear on the injection pump drive shaft?
I am fimilar with the injection pumps on the German Diesels, 454, 574, 684 etc.
Someone else can tell you how to time a 460.

Good luck
JB
