I have a 454 when i first purchased this tractor
the right side brake was the only one working.
With in a few hours it also failed to work (peddle to the floor) after some attemps at bleeding the system one brake will work if I pump it 20-30 times. Is there any tricks to bleeding these brakes. Also is it critical to use only the special IH brand of HYD. oil or will some other type or brand work if so what ones would it be.

Thanks Have a great day GOD BLESS Ray

Hi, it is important to use only IH Hytran hydraulic oil. My brother learned the hard way. He purchased a used wood splitter at an auction sale, not thinking he attached it to his 454 and all the oil in the wood splitter mixed with the Hytran and started to foam. Then air bubbles in the brakes etc.
Hints on bleeding the brakes:
1) Transmission fluid must be warm.
2) Run engine at fast idle 1300 RPM.
3) Loosen both bleed screws and connect a clear plastic tube onto the bleed screws and put the other end into a clean contianer to catch the Hytran fluid. Now my brother just lets the fluid flow until there are no more air bubles and closes the bleed screws. He does not pump brakes or pinch off the brake return line in front of the battery box.

The book tells you to pinch off the brake fluid return line and to pump the brakes.

As for the cause, it could be wrong hydraulic oil but most likely with a 454 it will be worn brake master cylinder or piston seals. Search this form for archive records for 454, 574, 684 they all have the same rear end just different engines.

Good luck
JB
