I posted a few days ago about how I thought the engine-driven PTO drive shaft was feeding power back to the transmission driveshaft and a couple responses said to check the pilot bearing. Well, over the long weekend, I removed the clutch to find one of the facings on the disk had shattered and was wedging its edge against the flywheel causing the clutch to lock up intermittantly. There is a 1/4" shiny spot around the inside of the flywheel where the broken piece of clutch facing was dragging.

I'm having the clutch relined now. Everything else (throwout and pilot bearings) looks fine. Wanted to post my findings in case others have same problem.

Bob;

I would like to add aword of caution here so maybe you don't face the same problem I encountered with my SMTA. When lining the PTO/Trans. input shafts into the clutch, enguage the PTO and turn it from the rear of the tractor while you line it up. I tried turning the flywheel while I lined it up and as I turned the flywheel the PTO shaft would also rotate and it did not line up as I thought and as I pulled the housing together I managed to bend the clutch disk.

Hope this helps!
