how do you know if you have a chiped gear? Im looking at an M and the guy says that first and revers might be chiped. How big of a pain is it to change these and how much are used gears going for? thanks in advance.

Usually there is a ticking sound when you drive it. For instance there was a loud ticking sound in the Farmall M I just parted out. But it was in all 5 gears plus reverse. 99% sure it was the input shaft on the transmission. If 1st has teeth missing or messed up, you should be able to hear it in first gear only. Also, I am not an expert on everything, But if the reverse gear use first gear, you should hear it there also. My dad and I have changed gears in an M before. Pretty simple if you knwo what your doing. I have a transmission that I am parting out that the gears are good in. If you need some let me know. Also, If you do not do heavy work, and all you hear is a light tick, drive it that way.
