A friend of mine has a 50 model Super A with the word SAMPLE cast into the right side of the block. Is this normal, by the way it was cast upside down. Any explaination would be greatly appreciated. Thanks H.B.

HB: I'm right into these little tractors, never heard of this so you have me curious. I have no idea what this means. I presume you guys have chacked the serial number for the year. I can tell you this, in early 1953 a major change was made to the Super A engibe block. The reason I know this is that it happened very shortly before my Super A was built, only a few hundred before. My serial number is 336977. I'm thinking they may have been sample testing this change as early as a couple years before. Just a thought we'll see what others have to say.

Not sure if it has engine 3 or not but believe it does, Will post a followup if that would help . Would be near end of Oct after our fall show. H.B.

HB: The change that was made was to accomodate larger pistons and sleeves in the Super C with the C-123 engine. What they did with Super A after that was use a thicker wall sleeve for the C-113 engine. Since the Super C came out in 1951, it is reasonable that IH may have been sampling this change. Probably didn't use full scale until 53 as they probably had a stock of old type blocks. I don't know this to be fact, just a hunch.
