I've got a 484 that the lights don't work on right now. As the wiring is all a little old I'm going to run new wiring and install new switches. My question is....do I need to use relays on the headlights, or can I run the wiring straight to the switch?

The switch itself has an amperage rating that it can handle and last for a reasonable time. I have no idea what the rating might be for your switch. The relay is a switch operated by a small current and usually the relay has contacts that will handle large currents. A starter solenoid is one example. If several lights are added to the tractor, the relay might increase the life of the primary light switch.

As busdriver said, a relay will take the higher current load off of your light switch, therby increasing its life. I have not bought a light switch for my 2444 yet, but I am sure it is not cheap. A relay will be a lot cheaper :)
Just make sure that you fuse things properly.
