how can you tell if piston/sleves are worn?

I did a compression check and all cylindes are at 105. It burnes oil and foules plugs quickly. I pulled head and looked at sleves. There is no visible ridge with straight edge and walls look good. Would it be safe to assume they are ok and problem is in the head? What elce can I check?

Thanks Bob

I have seen on rare occaisions where the piston ring gaps all line up and cause what you describe, the pistons have to come out to verify this however.

Could be the piston oil ring is stuck or worn out. Could try Marvel Mystery oil poured in Cylinders and let sit for day or two then turn engine over to get excess oil out of cylinders then start. This may or may not work which then is ring replacement time. If you do a rering job make sure to hone cylinders to remove ring glaze on cylinder walls. Tried the oil trick once or twice and got rings to reseal until I got time to do a rering job on our 1938 F20. We used this tractor every day for 40 years of farming til 1990,then had to rebuild engine with new sleeves, pistons, and rings last year.

Thought I would add, all four cylinders are burning oil. Is there a way to check the guides?

Bob

Since you've got the head off, take a few valve springs off and try to wiggle the valves in the guides. If you get any side to side movement, the guides are worn. That could be the biggest problem with your oil consumption.

I don't know what the compression should be, 105 might be a little low. You might be better off to get the valves ground and guides replaced since you are already into it this far.

As far as compression goes, the pistons are flat top. I found a spec sheet some where that said for a 152c, 95psi was OK. My manuel doesn't say. Since there is no grove at the top of the sleeve, I think the pistons and sleeves may have been replaced before, the bore is 3 3/8. I hate to rip it all down if not needed. I figure with the knolege on this board, there will be good insight and possibly save me some money and work.

Better figure on replacing the rings and bearings. The valve guides give very little trouble on the old ones and any oil leaking by them would be burned by the engine ( not fouling plugs), one sure way to check guides will be to look at the exhaust port on the head and see if it is coated in oil. A lot of times when a tractor set very long the rings stick then when used they either break or really stick. If you don't have very much ring on the sleeve I would replace the rings and all the bearings. If you need more power replace the sleeves and pistons with the overbore kit.

Before you get too far, check to make sure the oil return ports are cleared. If excess oil is staying up in the head, it could leak down the valve quides. I had this on at least one car engine in the past.

Also make sure the plugs are the correct heat range.
