is there a compression release on the engine to make it turn over easier with the starter. or for starting .... it has been cranking over very slowly both ways.

I would start by taking the starter some where and have it checked out a starter can be dragging and you won't realize it until you either put on a new one or have it overhauled. If starter is good check battery next. Any auto parts store or starter rebuilder should have have a machine to ck starter.

When the switch over lever is in the gas position, a third valve in each cylinder opens to a chamber in the head that contains the spark plug. This reduces the compression ratio for gas operation. The starter does not crank the engine very fast, even in gas mode, but it will be much slower in diesel. Sounds like your compression release valves may not be set correctly. You have to remove the valve rocker arm cover to set the clearance on the decompression valves.
