Went to start my 140 yesterday and the clutch would not disengage the transmission. Had to put it in neutral with the engine off to get it started. Then the clutch would not let me put it in gear. What do I check first? Help, I can hear the grass growing while I try and figure out what is wrong.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I pulled it out in the yard with my 128 Cub Cadet, then started it in 4th gear and the clutch broke loose. I was suprised at how little effort it took to break it loose. I took it to my mechanic today and will be ordering a new clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, and pilot bearing tomorrow. Again, thanks for all your input. You guys are great!

A bad pilot bearing in the crankshaft will do this also. Just finished one that had that problem. Will the engine start with it in gear and the clutch depressed? Better split and fix that way you will not have any more problems.

JW,
Had same problem with one of my Farmall A's that I am restoring. In my case, the tractor had been setting in a barn for years before I got it. When I got the engine running, I climbed on the seat pushed in on the clutch and it ground the gears when I moved the lever. I shut down the engine and sprayed a little JB Blaster on the clutch springs ect in through the holes in the bell housing. I let it set overnight. Next day, with engine off, I put the tractor in gear, pushed in on the clutch and held the pedal down with a block of wood. I then rocked the rear tires and the clutch broke free with just a little effort. Thought this was the least distructive way. Oh by the way, when I store my tractors for the winter up in Ohio, I put a block of wood between the pedal and the tractor frame keeping the clutch "pushed in" all winter. Never had a problem. Best of luck to you....Gerald

JW: As Oars put it just something stuck. Several ways to free it use his solution. Have someone tow you with another vehicle as you hold clutch down and in gear. Lock the brakes, tie the clutch pedal down and use hand crank, starter may even do it.

Long term solution is use the tractor more.

Sounds like the same problem I had with my H. Disc rusted to the fly wheel. I started my tractor in gear, ran the throttle up, pushed the clutch in, and hopped on the brake. Shazam that broke it loose. Better than taking the whole damn thing apart. Good luck.
