Help, Parked the tractor two weeks ago. went to start it this morning it started as usual and then died. it will not restart it cranks but won't run. It is full of gas, the fuel is on the glow plugs glow but it won't run. Could it have jumped timing? does it have a timing chain?
It has always purred like a kitten Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Maury, great news. Those tractors are very reliable and tough. If properly maintained will last for a long time. Were a bit difficult to start in -20F winter. A block heater was necessary or a steep hill.

No, I don't know of a used loader. I am trying to remember if it was an IH 1500 or 1550 loader that we had on ours. I don't recommend the IH quick attach 2250 loader as it is to heavy for a 354.

Glad I could help. Good luck finding a loader.

Hi Maury, If you are positive there is fuel to the injectors, is there smoke coming out the rail pipe ?

Had the following happen on a 8 week old B414D, I was baling with it and all of a sudden it made a clattering noise, smoke came out the air breather and it stopped. Luckly it was still under warranty. Problem was key came out of camshaft timing gear. IH had to replace all the pistons, valves and pushrods.
The other major problem we had was on a B434D, going up a hill it suddenly stopped and would not start again. Although there was fuel to the injector pump, there was no fuel to the injectors. Had to replace injector pump.

Good luck with your 354

JB, thanks for your help. Today I took your advise and removed the lines going to the injectors cranked the engine until I got fuel and then re-connected them it started right up. You were right there must have been air in the injector lines. Thnaks again for your help.
On a side note Do you have any idea where I might find a front loader for this tractor? used is fine.
Thanks angain for your help,

Kindest Regards,
Maury O'Hearn

It has been a few years since I worked on a 354D but is yours the British built 154 CU In Diesel with a CAV injector pump ?
Do a quick check on the fuel shut off rod on top of the injector pump that it is functioning properly. Had the key come out one time and it stayed in the shut off position.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. First of all check for clogged fuel filters. Replace them if necessary. Then you will have to bleed the fuel system to get the air out. There is a hand pump on the fuel pump on the side of the engine block to manually pump fuel through the system. First you have to get the air out of the fuel filters, there is a bleed screw on top of the filter, open it and pump the hand pump until air bubble free Diesel fuel comes out, then shut this bleed screw and repeat the process with the bleed screw(s) on the injector pump. I can't remember if this pump had a bleed screw on the primary and another on the secondary. Some of these tractors will start now but others require bleeding the injector lines. We had a B414D and a 434D which were indentical except for the skins. The B414D would start without bleeding the injector lines and the 434D you had to bleed at least 2 injector lines.

BE CAREFUL THE DIESEL FUEL FROM THE INJECTOR PUMP IS UNDER HIGH PRESSURE.

To bleed injector line, loosen one of the nuts on one of the injector feed lines out of the injector pump. Then crank the engine over with the starter and when fuel is sprayed out, tightent this nut and repeat for the other 3.

If you do not get any fuel spraying, either you didn't get your fuel system bled properly or inject pump is not working.

Good luck
JB

JB thanks for the info is does have the CAV Pump however the fuel system is fine (I opened the bleed screws on the filter and on the pump and just got fuel no air. So it seems to be getting plenty of fuel. I also checked the fuel shut off rod it is working correctly that's why I thought maybe it jumped timeing. It ran for about 30seconds and then died - like it was just cold but it just won't re start. It haas never done this before at first I thought maybe the fuel valve was close but it is open and flowing fine.
Any other ideas of what to check? the glow plugs are glowing it has fuel, I am breathing so it has air by all accounts it should run. I must be over looking something...
