I have a 460 Utility that I use to pull my Brush Hog. My pasture is not hilly but is rough. 1st gear is too slow, 2nd gear is too fast. 2nd gear with T/A enguaged is perfect. My question; will running with the T/A enguaged cause any problems in the long run? I would really hate to have to replace the T/A someday! Thank you!

This just my thoughts on TA`s. They work like a clutch they only wear when slipping and they only slip when changing gears, low to high or high to low on a TA. Shift them fast and not very offten. Like I said just my thoughts. kjm

Dad had a 300U that he had the same problem with chopping corn with an IH 15 harvester, 1st was to slow, 2nd to fast, but 2nd TA was just right.
He did custom corn harvesting and he would run that 300U in 2nd TA for the 2 months in the fall.
Had it for 4 years and never had any TA or clutch problems, just had to use the brakes on a down hill. The only problem was the small gas tank, had to fill it about 3 times a day.

Dad had a 350 and we used the TA al the time. seems it was abut the right spped for plowing in 4th TA half the time. If it adjusted right it willnot hurt it. Like was said, it will coast down hill in TA thiough. Also, keep the transmision oil(Hy-tran) changed regularly (every year or two) The oil likes to absorb moisture and can cause the TA to slip.

I don't think it would be any problem. I know some say not to,but we ran them that way all the time and never had any trouble. For the hours you are likely to put on mowing pasture, I would say go ahead.

If you use the TA very long at a time it will get hot also going down hill it free wheels. The TA was first just for short time hard pulls. The 706, 806, 756 etc. ran in oil and held back on hills they can be use in high or low for long pulls.

Jimmy your wrong, If you have a owners manuel for a tractor that had the mechnical TA it says nothing about short use. I have three tractors with the mechnical TA and have on may occasions pull them hard all day for many days on the low side without a problem. One of my tractors has over 10K hours on it.

My mistake I have only had 3 of the old style and one new since 1962 and had always done what an old IHC tractor Mach. had told me, and another guy who was a IHC District Service Manager had told me. "Sorry"
