My mother in law just gave me tihs tractor. It was pought the year she was born. She feels like as long as it runs so will she. It was last used about two years ago. We put on a new carb, points, plugs, wires, & coil. Used it about two hours and parked it for two years. I put fresh gas in it, cleaned the carb and got it running. Runs smoothly until under a load. Has no power. I'm thinking that is doesn't have enough compression to work under a load. How much compression should each cylinder produce?

Cecil, you might be on to something. I'm confident the fuel system is fine. How would I go about checking the distributor? Little bit of WD-40?

If the tractor ran OK when it was parked 2 years ago it's not likely to suddently have a low compression problem now. (And if did it also would be start hard and would run poorly under no load.)

More likely something in the fuel system got gummed up while sitting idle - especially if the gas was not treated with stabilizer before the tractor was parked. Make sure the governor to carburetor linkage moves freely and does not bind. Remove the sediment bowl and clean the inlet screen. Make sure there's a good flow of fuel from the tank before sticking the bowl back on. Then run the engine and try adjusting the carb high speed mixture screw out ½ turn at a time and see if that helps. If it doesn't, suggest removing the carburetor for an internal inspection/cleaning.

Also good idea to check the aircleaner for obstruction (wasp nest, etc) and make sure the carb choke plate opens fully with the choke rod pushed in.

Good luck!

Here is a link to a site that lists spec's, including compression. Look under "Tune Up Info".
Might have what you're looking for.

Gee...I must be about the same age as your mother and tractor..... ...I run pretty smooth without a load too, but when put under load, I have no power either!

I'll let someone better qualified answer your compression question...I was thinking 90 to 110 lbs, but to be honest, that is a guess.
