606 overheating

My 606 had a huge overheating today with steam billowing from the radiator. The temp guage was reading only 180 degrees. I got it to the barn and when I pulled the grill off, both the radiator and the hydrolic fluid coolant grill where gunked with oil and dirt. I figured that since I have it apart, I might as well take the radiator to be cleaned and tested, and change the temp guage, wire and probe. My question is, how do I tell that my water pump is working? Also is there anything else I should look at?

Yep like everyone said water pumps very seldom quit pumping. They may leak or lock up but I have never seen one quit pumping. I guess all of the fins could rust off, but never seen that.

You can check for flow in the radiator. With the tractor running, the radiator cap off, and the tractor up to the temp of the thermostat you should be able to see the coolant swirling in the top of the radiator. You need to be careful so as to not burn yourself with the hot coolant. Chances are you may not be able to get it up to operating temp with is just idling with no load. Like Nebaska Cowman said the water pumps are pretty reliable.
