Trying to pull water furrows in 4th and the M is too slow, trying to use an MM sickle mower and 1st is too fast in heavy grass. What's my answer? Can't get rid of the tractor. My dad bought it new in 53'. Just re-restored it last year.

Find an M tranny with the high speed gear option, and use the parts from it to make yours faster. I have an H with the F code at the end of the serial number, 4th gear is faster than a standard 4th gear, it is great for sickel bar mowing, and rotary hoeing.

DOnt know what a water furrow is,Im dumb as a brick, but if you cant cut grass with a sickle mower in 1st gear, then it sounds like aomething is wrong with the mower, not the tractor!

Should have said heavy weeds instead of grass. It does OK in grass a foot tall but I was trying to mow some ditches that the airplane pilots have fertilized all summer and the stuff has grown up three or four feet tall.

Scott, You can make the M go faster by finding on of those M&W 9 speed transmission adapters. I have one on my MD and it goes about 12 mph in high range fourth. There also was a slow speed transmission modification, but I don't know if you can use both the M&W high/low range system and the slow speed mod at the same time. It would be a lot of work to make the modifications either way. Roger

Curious as to what you mean by "pull water furrows". The Super M should pull what we call a 4-row middle buster, or furrowing-out rig for irrigation. But, I doubt if it will pull it in 4th at 6.75 mph, so obviously you are talking about something else. Is this for rice? Can't help you with the mowing. There were M&W nine speeds for the M, but I think they added faster gears (that would help with the water furrows). There was also an IH made low-low attachment, that will be hard to find. Other reductions will run off the pto, don't know how that affects your pto driven mower.

This is a disc furrower set to throw the dirt out. There are two sets or rows about twenty feet apart on a tool bar. Power is not the problem for 4th gear. Maybe I need Super M gears for 4th because the regular M does not run 6.75 MPH. It's more like 4-4.5. It will pull it in 5th if I get a running start and only run downhill. Does a real nice job of scattering the dirt. And yes, this is for dry planted rice and also used on flat planted wheat or soybean fields. Just trying to keep a job for the M in this land of big Magnums and JDs.

OK, then you have an M bought in 1953 after the Super M's were available, 4th is 5 1/8 I believe. In this part of the country, we would probably use what is called a "border disk", to make a border or berm, and flood irrigate the area in between, most commonly used for alfalfa. A border disk is usually 6 disks placed on a tool bar in groups of three facing each other to throw the dirt inward toward each other to make a border or berm -- only one set on a tool bar. Irrigated wheat is sometimes planted that way, but most irrigated wheat, soybeans, corn around here are planted on top of 30 inch beds made with the middlebuster thing I mentioned. Good luck finding the gears. You might call Mike Bunck at Steel Wheel Ranch -- 785-548-7437. He is familiar with what will work and what won't. The 7mph 4th gear for the M is rare. Mike might recommend a whole gear set from a Super M, don't know if you want to go to that much trouble.

I have heard of people putting in a reduction gear in M's that would help with the mower. I dont know how difficult it is to do or about expense?

Taller tires might make it go faster...
