Please help an IH dummy out. I usually work on MM's, but I am trying to get my father in laws M back into the field. The outer axle bearing on one side has some substantial play in it. How do you remove just this bearing? Do you have to pull the axle tube from the rearend housing?

Thanks in advance.

Joe

If the j bolt does not work forget the housing drain the rear end remove the PTO remove the cap screw from the end of that axle and remove the washer but the screw all the way back in get a piece of shaft that will fit between the 2 cap screws of each axle and screw the loose screw back out and it will bush the axle out of the housing then if you want to change the inside bearing pull the bull gear back some and move it over to other side you should be able to get at the bearing. you can not pull the housing off the axle you have to pull the axle then the housing.

You can pull axle housing and axle as a unit. You may still have to use your method of pushing axle out bull gear.

With a little luck you can, remove wheel, becareful, remove seal retainer. Now with a slide hammer with a j hook you can remove bearing. May have to work the balls around to get j hook in, but it can be done. BTDT. An other way is with the almighty gas wrench. Or you can remove axle housing as other post says.

I have replaced these bearings in a C and an H, but as part of restorations, when I had the transmission cover off. Others will probably tell you to remove the pto, slide the bull gear off, and either slide the axle out or remove the axle housing and axle. It seems to me if the outer bearing is shot, perhaps the inner one should be replaced too. I can be corrected, but if my memory serves me right, I know of no bearing puller that will work, just not enough room.
