My 1953 Super A has a woods mower deck and after an hour and a half will start to surge under the load. If the deck is raised the surging stops but will continue if going up hill. I can cut off the mower and travel around, but if I go uphill the surging starts back up. It bucks so bad all I can do is get it to the garage and wait about 5 hours. Then I can continue for another hour and a half. I have rebuilt the carb. replaced the points and condenser, drained and cleaned the fuel tank, all lines and the screen in the bowl as well as the screens in the carb. I'm stumped. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

John, There is a surge stop adjustment on the governor that you should adjust. I just started up my "B" after a complete rebuild including the governor. I started it up and it really surged. The adjustment is on the bottom of the governor. You take off the cap nut and there is a screw adjustment inside. It is trial and error as you should screw it in a little at a time each time restarting the engine and checking for surging. It is too close to the fan (I feel) to adjust with the engine running. I was amazed as I just adjusted mine a couple times and the surging stopped completely. Roger

John: 3 possibilities, float in carb not quite right, gasket leak on carb or linkage adjustment between governor and carb. I'll lay my bets on one of those three.

What a timely post! Today our 140 surged and nothing would stop it short of shutting it off. At first I thought it was something to do with the governor, but I took off the link between the governor and carb and it still surged. And that was with me holding the carb linkage in the fully closed position. I guess that rules out the governor. I can't see anything wrong with the carb as it ran fine until today when it started with the surge. Any help would be appreciated.

PAA: Don't be right hasty on this, it may cure itself. Try draining gas off bottom of carb. Sounds as though you may have a flake of dirt somewhere. I may clear itself or you may need to take carb apart.

I think Hugh is Right, I rebuilt my (a) engine completely, beffore ever hearing it run, on the first startup it idled perfectly, but when you incresed the rpms it starting surging badly, after adjusting the governer it smoothed out, and hasent surged since, the governer also has an adjustment on the top, one is for high speed adjustment and the other is for low speed adjustment.
