ive found an 826d down the road. it has 5000 hours on it. new clutch 3 years ago. was parked 3 years ago in barn, needs water pump and motor started to skip? the guy wants 2300 is this a fair price? the tractor overall is in excellent condition. good tires. fender tractor. i was thinking about putting a 400 series motor in it? what would make the motor skip? id like to farm with it, but have a good stock pulling tractor too. what do you guys think about this?? thanks
derek

Start by changing the fuel filters and make sure you have a good flow of fuel to the injection pump. The Inj pump that the D-358 engine uses had a hydraulic governor in it and fuel filters were the start of a lot of little problems.
good luck MNcharlie

Could be injector could be in the pump. You would need some parts off the tractor that you got the 400 out of like side rails motor mounts. should not be all that hard. But that D358 is a good engine.

The price he is quoting you sounds very fair. Especially if all it has a weak injector pump. If the rest of the tractor is in the condition you say, I would be very inclined to diagnosing the problem before switching the engine. Could you be more specific on what it is doing? We had a 806 (not sure if that is the same engine) but it pulled extremely well, 18' disk & field cultivator, 800 six row air planter.

i can only tell you what he told me, the tractor hasnt run in 3 years, i guess he said after the new clutch, the motor started to skip and sputter and it got so bad it would barely run. then they parked it. i know hes not a real matinence freak, but it did have oil in it. can you tweak these motors like you can a 400 series? and what would be involved in putting a turbo on it? thanks derek

Given the hours and for it to come on suddenly like that it is most likely the injector pump (unless he ran it out of oil). I don't know that much about adding turbos (need a REAL mechanic for that kind of advice) but some people on this site have posts about adding turbos to 560's so adding one to a 826 (using a 1206 set up) shouldn't be that difficult.

An 826 has a German diesel in it and it will run cheap and is a good motot untill u have to buy parts for it, there pricey i wouldn turn it up or put a turbo on it for 2 reasons, if u want a turbocharged tractor go buy one, the other is that all turbocharged IH engines have oilers that shoot oil at the piston skirts to cool them because of the increased work load.

If you get really crazy we had a 1206 that had a "problem" with the turbo, it was cranking about 211 HP on the dyno and we had been using it for heavy field work. The transmission later went out as we just ran it for all it was worth with that kind of power. Didn't help any that we also had a dozer blade mounted on it. The 361 never gave us a problem even when generating that kind of power on a daily basis.
