Stuck clutch question

Yesterday I started up the H only to find that the clutch was stuck (frozen, would not release, pushing the pedal to no avail) This hasn't happenned before, at least not in the several years I've had it.
I checked the linkage to make sure it wasn't something loose or broken, then tried a couple of things. First I tied the pedal down, put the tractor in fifth gear, and rocked it back and forth. The engine bumped but the clutch held on. Then I untied the pedal, climbed back on, put it in reverse, and hit the starter. One brief lurch, the engine fired up, and everything back to normal. So, eventually, a question. How do I keep it from happening again? I'm guessing that tieing the pedal down when I park it will, but I'd just as soon not add any more to the Shut Down/Start Up procedure. Thanks
Wm

Thanks, y'all. It has been about six weeks since I washed the tractor, it hadn't had another chance to get wet, and it gets regular (at least weekly) use. Unless it happens again I'll call it a 'one of' and try not to think about it. And it is one more reason to go ahead and split the old boy. He needs a ring gear, anyway.

Of course you know you can change the clutch without splitting the tractor. But not the ring gear. And you can turn the ring gear around if it hasn't been, and most of them haven't been, at least I've never found one that had been.

Although the clutches do stick with infrequent use, the usage you indicate may mean the clutch lining has broken and part of it was wedged between the flywheel and pressure plate. This is not uncommon and is often the problem when the clutch won't release all the way, so looking into it may be a good idea.

Yeah, I better go ahead and start getting around to it. It's gotten to where I've got to turn the engine a few degrees with the hand crank every time I shut it down so it'll be at a good spot when I want to crank it back up. And a clutch while I'm at it. Time to collect a couple of neighborly favors.

William - We run into the same problem with a couple of our tractors. Even though they are stored inside the clutches sometimes stick if they sit unused for a long (6+ months) time. To unstick them we do exactly the same thing you did.

Only prevention I've found that works is to start up and run the tractor every 2 or 3 months - making sure to slip the clutch for a few seconds each time in order to "shine up" the mating surfaces.

I'm hesitant to tie down the clutch pedal while in storage for a couple reasons: 1 - With the clutch released it's easier for moisture to get between the clutch facings and the flywheel/pressure plate surfaces and causing rust, and 2 - If it somehow DOES manage to stick with the pedal tied down, you've got no way to release the clutch further to help break it free without disassembling the clutch.

Has the tractor been sitting outside in the rain? Not likely that this would cause it unless you have had an extreme amount of rain, or has it otherwise been exposed to moisture?
I have had the clutch stick even when it was parked inside where it was dry, but only after it sat for a length of time.
It's not likely to happen again.
