Farmall Voltage

I am no tractor expert and need some help on checking my generator on a IH 1960 140. I have a voltage meter (which I don't know how to use very well. My question is; how can I check to see if my generator is charging my battery. The meter dial that is on the tractor is busted and does not work. Thanks.

You need a meter that is 'slightly' more accurate than a dime-store meter, but here goes:

A 12 volt battery should have about 13.8 to 14.5 volts at the battery terminal, with the engine running about half open and all other accessories off. Figure about one-half these readings for a 6 volt system. If you do not have this reading, put the meter lead on the ARM terminal of the generator. If the reading is still low or non-existant, remove the wire from the F terminal. Short this terminal to ground. You should see a hefty jump in voltage at the ARM terminal when you do this. If this works normally, and your battery voltage is still low, the regulator is probably your culprit. Be sure your wiring is all sound before going to these steps.

Set the volt meter for the correct DC range and attach the leads to the battery observing polarity. (red to +, black to -)
Note voltage. A fully charged 6 volt battery at rest will read 6.3 volts; a fully charged 12 volt will read 12.6 volts.
Start the engine and see if the voltage increases from where it was.
Charging voltage for a 6 volt system should be in the 6.8 - 7.2 range.
Charging voltage for a 12 volt system should be in the 13.8 - 14.4 range. Colder temps should cause a higher reading than hot summer temps.
