I hit a sizeable tree backing up the pond bank with my 1950 H and 6ft mower. I did not have an overiding clutch on the shaft. Now the shaft spins free but won't engage. The pto lever moves free. What should I expect when I remove the pto?

Thanks for the comments, I removed the pto today. I don't know the term for it but there is a tube that surrounds the pto shaft that appears to drive it, the tube was broken in half.

A over ride clutch may have prevented you from hitting the tree in the first place, but had you still contacted the tree with the clutch the result would have been the same. The PTO has either sheared or I have seen them break the engagment linkage in the housing to where they would not engage.

Not knowing anything about the H I would say you have a sheared shaft. after fixing it I would assure that the clutch on the mower works. I mow thick stuff and I set mine so that it barely slip at start up.If it has a shear pin I would replace with a grade 2 bolt. I went to visit my sister and found a grade 8 bolt in her mower they still had it in after twisting a pto shaft.
