I just bought a 1971 656 gas narrow front tractor, and i am having trouble getting it to shift into all the gears. I first thought the end of the shifter was worn so i brazed up the sides for a tighter fit, this didnt help. i also greased up the whole mechanism to made everything slide a little better, but that didnt seem to help much. with the shifter pulled out, there is a bar with a square cut notch it which the shifter fits in. This is supposed to slide left and right so you can get to your gear sets., however, the shifter manages to pop out or it just binds up.. anyone else have this kinda trouble? if so please let me know how to correct the problem,thanks-John

John: The advise you are getting from Bill and KB only way to go. I tinkered with one 25 years ago for a bit and then installed the kit. I don't remember it being that many dollars back then. I guess time changes everything. My tractor had about 6,000 hours when it gave trouble.

My main reason for posting here is Eldon's responce. His clutch and TA are out of adjustment. A lot of people allow this to continue. In my opinion some of the wear in the shift linkage can be atributed to hard shifting created by poor clutch and TA adjustment. Clutch and TA adjustment on these should be checked regularly and adjusted to the letter, and by the book. CLOSE DOES NOT COUNT. Tractors with loaders will also have a lot more shift linkage wear than tractors that have seen nothing but drawbar work.

replacing that square bar will help. i have an extra one for the gear drive 656 out in the shop, or i'd give you the part #. i finally put an ih rebuild kit in it, it cured the problem, bad news is the kit was around $500.

I have a '67 diesel. I have to pull the TA back sometimes to be able to move shift lever. Used to have to do it a little, now have to a lot. There is some adjustment in the linkage on the side by the clutch pedal, but mine is maxed out. Good luck

Yeah, the linkage on the 656 series can get troublesome as it wears out. We never had too many problems with our 686, but I know the original owners, and they say they had tons of trouble, took it to the IH dealer, had them rebuild/replace entire linkage.
