M-Cracked Head?

I have got a high compression M head (casting number 8060) that I was going to have rebuilt. The head shop found several cracks in it. One crack runs from one seat over to the other seat. Some of the water port holes have hairline cracks and so on. He thought I might want to find another head. I talked to another guy that was probably more Farmall oriented, and he said that it was common for those heads to crack like that but rare to find one that would leak. I was going to try to find a good used one, but if they commonly crack like that I might not find one any better than mine. I know for sure that the head gasket was blown. They are talking about $560 for a reconditioned head and $400 just to fix the cracks in mine. Just started to look locally for used head but haven't covered all the bases yet. What are your thoughts on the cracks? What should I do?

I have a reconditioned head I think a 8574 which is the replacement for the 8060. E-mail me with your location or call (563)583-3716 and leave a message. If we are close maybe we can make a deal.

Are you anywhere close to Kansas and how much are you wanting for the head? I am in North East Kansas. Does reconditioned mean that it has good or new valves, seats, guids, ext. or does that mean that it has had cracks repaired also?

I sold a reconditioned M head for about half that last year. It wasn't a high compression head, but it was in perfect condition. Shop around and you should be able to find something that will work for you for less than $560. I wouldn't put a cracked head back on a tractor, and I don't have a lot of faith in the repair jobs I've seen, so I'd try to find a replacement.

A crack can be welded, but I know there are maybe only two or three people in Kansas that are noted for doing it right, and it is very expensive. I would think you could find one at a very reasonable price from a salvage yard that you could rebuild with new valves, guides and seats. I would not put a craked head back on the engine.
