Does anyone know of problems with Farmall 340 diesel. Is $4500 with two and three points and three bottom plow a good price. The tractor seems to have been taken care of. Thanks.

I've been working on bringing a TD340 crawler back to life after it sat for somewhere between 5 and 8 years (owner can't remember for sure). Anyway, after tinkering for a few weeks and not getting fuel up at the injectors, I bought a service manual for the ROOSA MASTER injector pump and took it apart, found the problem, put new seals and gaskets in and now it runs fine. These are old tractors and parts can be a bear. ROOSA MASTER is now STANADYNE Corp. and there is no IH any more Komatsu handles some IH parts. But if you like IH and enjoy tinkering, then a 340 could be a blast. Hope this helps. Jim

The 340 was made about the same time as the 560 and 460 . So iam guessing that they used the same type of fuel injection system as the bigger tractors. they had a glow plug to heat the fuel in the injector for easyer starting you should find a guage on the tractor that says glow plug meter with a button on the side of it . you hold the button in for about half a minute to start when the engine is cold less when the engine is warm and keep holding it after the engine is running smooth. the important thing to rememder is if it doesnt start well is that the glow plugs are all working and to have good batteries and an engine heater in cold clinates . the engines in the bigger tractors were very fuel efficent in the diesel versons . my dad had a340 in a rowcrop and gas verson and i thought it was a great little tractor . he also has a 706 with the same type engine with 16000 hours on it

Wes: After seeing the total numbers you guys have quoted for the 340, my guess is a diesel will be quite rare. In that era diesels were priced substancially higher that the gassers. I guess a lot hasn't changed. I bought a new 560D and the price was well worth it on the larger tractors. Those 6 cylinder gas engines were quite heavy drinkers.

I'm thinking in the power range of a 340, plus the price of fuel back then, probably not many people laid out the extra dollars for a diesel in the 35 hp range. Just my reasoning.

They were built from 1959 thru 1963. Total production was 7198 of both gas and diesel, row crop, utility and crawlers. They were built with and without TA and had live PTO. Average price for a row crop/gas is between $2,000 and $4,000 depending on condition and location.

Maybe someone else can help you on a diesel.

GOOD LUCK

I dont know the value, but they must be rare. I have a 1959 gas. They only made like 6000 in 3 years of all engines.
