I have a 1948 C farmall and was wondering if it was a positive ground system? The guy before me ammitted that he had no idea on what he was doing when it came to mechanics. It is a 6 volt system and he had a 12 volt battery hooked to it and the positive cable hooked to the starter. Is this wrong should it be the negative going to the starter and the positive to the ground?

Ben, these tractor's were released from factory with a 6v positive ground system with a cut-out (earlier units) or voltage regulator (later units or upgraded to regulator). Now then, that's how they started out. Many, many of these 1940's tractors and so on have been converted to a wide variety of any number of ways to wire them up or even converted to 12 volt. By what you have said, it sounds to me like your tractor has been atleast partially converted to 12 volt or perhaps entirely. Alot of people use the 6 volt starter with the 12 volt conversion. As long as you don't grind and grind on the starter when starting, the 6 volt starter will actually hold up fairly descent on 12 volt. If you choose to go back to the original set up, be sure you go back original with everything which will require you to find out what exactly the previous owners have done during there conversions. You can do this by simply looking at the tractor if you know what you are looking at. Did they reduce ampes to the coil? Does it have 6 or 12 volt light bulbs? And so on.

If yours is a 48 does the generator still have the cutout on top of it or is there a reg mounted below. If you have a regulator check underneath it and they will usually say which ground and also the voltage the reg needs to function. Take off the cover and see how many coils the reg-cutout has. if only one coil you have a cutout and the 6v pos ground will probably work after polarizing it by just touching a wire from the batt lead to the A terminal of the gen. Let us know and we can go from there.

No the orignal generator is missing. I have ordered one and hope to get it soon. It may need to be rewired. Because the generator on it is a 12V negative ground, but the starter was the orignal 6 volt starter. Hope it didn't get to damaged.

Thanks

Yes, originally positive ground with the 6volt system... after switching back, if the amp gage operates backwards, switch those wires as well

What actual difference does it make on the system if the ground is neg.or pos.?
