Hub center cracked-replace??

The rear wheel hub centers on my M are cracked and several chunks missing. It looks like water/ice may have frozen in there and cracked the casting or someone beat on it. The side the saddle clamp bolts screws into is ok and solid and beefy. The guy I bought it from told me many Farmalls are like that and that people run them all the time like this. Any thoughts on how critical it is to replace? I don't do any serious plowing or heavy work with this tractor, it's just a hobby tractor.

Hubs are alot more available than rims (alot of rims rusted out). Should be able to find a hub out of salvage for maybe a little more than its melt down value. I'm not going to say whether or not I would run it the way it is. I would have to see where the chunks are missing and where the cracks are. If they were in the right place I wouldn't be afraid to run it, but if they were in the wrong place I would lean toward replacing. If that axle would break out of the center hub, it could be dangerous in a way that it could cause a roll over or something during operation.

What has happened is that at one time an axle clamp broke and in doing so broke a chunk out of the wheel casting. The chunk that is missing don't hurt anything it only looks bad.

In My Opinion:
Not a big concern if your not going to work it hard or speed down the road. Make sure you have enough meat left to do the job. Yes many of these do have cracks and are missing small peices but are still holding. You yourself are going to have to be the judge. It is your tractor and your behind. If unsure replace.

If the hub fails what will be the result? To me it doesn't matter if you are going to drive fast or pull hard. When that sucker lets go the potential for serious injury is great at any speed or pull. As readily available as hubs and wheels are why would you operate with that known defect? Six years from now your teen ager might be the victim. Operating these old machines is a lot of fun but we don't need to increase the hazards of our hobby. My nickel.

I agree with Dick on this one. M hubs are easy to find in the boneyard for not much money. Fix it before its a problem or worse. My opinion.
