I told my son that I can start my 'H' and disconnect the battery and it will still run. He doesn't believe me. How do I explain it to him?

I remember my dad doing that on the 8 N we had. He would take the battery out of the truck, put in in the tractor, crank the tractor and but the battery back in the truck. My Dad passed away when I was 10 and i don't have a lot of memories of him, but that made an impression on me.

Ask him to show you the battery on a push lawnmower, or a gas powered weed trimmer...
Same idea, just larger scale.

I repeatedly preach my sermon that disconnecting the battery on any machine that is running is not good. Never good for the charging system-never makes anything better, but may be harmless in some cases. Many alternators will be damaged by disconnecting the battery while running. The downside potential of disconnecting is much greater than any possible benefits.

Well you may be preaching out of turn this time. I also run my Super M without a battery on a regular basis. As long as I pull it to start it and do not have a battery in it, the alternator never gets energerized, so it does nothing more than keep the belt tight.

So how is your tractor firing the plugs if nothing on you electrical system is working?

At the risk of sounding really dumb, how do I tell if my 'H' has a generator or a magneto?

Gary most tractors have a alt. or gen. I think what you are asking is a coil or mag. Hope this helps. Rick P.

That is an easy question the generator runs with a belt and has wires going back to the steering post area. The magneto has the wires going to the spark plugs. The spark plugs are on the right side of the engine when you are setting on the seat. There are four of them.

If you can indeed do that then your tractor has a magneto on it. Magnetos don't require an electrical system.

Not nesisarily. I have done it with a functional generator and distributor. The generator produced enough juice for the coil untill I idled it down to idle.

Cute story. If you are serious about your question, the tractor's starter must use stored energy in the battery to turn the traactor over to start it. Ounce it is started, the tractor is capable of running without stored energy because the generator or mag wichever you have produces enough electricity to create the spark for the spark plugs which is all the engine needs to just run. If you have a distributor, the tractor will likely die if you turn the lights on, or perhaps if engine is idled down to real low RPM because then you are using more juice than the generator is putting out. I think you have the right idea. Teach the kids when they are young. I learned alot when I was growing up, being around the old tractors.
