I just brought home a 1947 H and am trying to get it running. I took off the carb and took it apart and found that the float was all gummed up. so I freed it up and made sure that gas was running through it before I put it back together. when I got the carb back on the tractor I tried to start it. I pulled the choke and cranked. when I pushed in the choke and quit cranking a mass amount of gas came out of the air intake end of the carb. what happened, what did I do wrong and how can I fix it. thanks for the info in advance.

Two possible causes. With gas turned on under the tank the carb should not leak out gas like you were saying. If it does, then you got a float and needle valve problem inside the carb. If it only does it for a little bit after choking, then you are simply overchoking it. If this tractor is in fair running condition it should only need very minimal full choking to start. If I need to choke mine, I go all the way and let all the way off right away while cranking. Very rarely do I need to parshaly choke for the tractor to run (only during cold weather untill tractor is warmed up).

It sounds like the float is going too high. It is overflowing out the metering stem. I don't know the proper float adjustment, but I flip the carb upside down and bend the float so it sets level when closed, and drops down about 1/4 inch when the needle opens. Hope this helps. ChadS

What you are seeing is a common symptom of this model. The design of the H carb is such that very little choking is necessary to richen the mixture in the cylinders. 2 revolutions at full choke is about all that should be done at a time.

On my '47 the only way to use the choke is to pullitoutpushitin just that quick or it will flood.

Your life will be a lot easier if you go ahead and do a total rebuild of that carb right now. Otherwise, it will never be right.
