I am not familiar with getting an old magneto that's been sitting around for 50 years charged back up. Is any one knowledgable about the contents of the MD overhaul manuals for a 10-20? Does it cover all the important stuff so a person (like me) who has no first hand knowledge about old machinery can learn it enough to get this machine running again?

I'll tell you JM, I am an electrician and while I understand in theory how a Magneto works and have more insight into how to rebuild one than most I wouldn't dream of attempting it. After several years of fighting with my F-12 and having great difficulty in starting it, I can say with confidence that unless you are on povertys door, it will be well worth your money to have the big boys go through your magneto and give yourself the assurance that it is performing properly and eliminate that entire spectrum of troubles from and problems you may be having with your tractor.

Let me recommend someone whom I have great confidence in and who has treated me well at a fair price: Talk with Steve Belanger at Steve@MainelyMagnetos.com or try www.MainleyMagnetos.com. Phone number 207 834 7309. Not only did he confidently walk me through my problems and then do me a great job but things worked out just as he claimed. My tractor runs beautifully and the money I spent was well worth it. I wish I had bit the bullet earlier and saved myself considerable frustration.

when you go to dissasemble the mag you have to remove the safty gap screw and the armature brushes before you pull out the armature. I would highly recomend the book "How to Restore Tractor Magnetos" by Neil Yerigan

most of the time a mag can be brought back to life by a good cleaning. the points are the most critical part. You scare me when you talk about a 10-20 those old E-4 mags are obsolete (thumb nuts to attach plug wires) The coils leak tar, get spongy and are doomed to failure and replacements are hard to come by.
most repair manuals are written for seasoned mechanics but if you get stumped someone here will walk you through it.
