MD starter removal/question about overdrive

I recently purchased an MD. The starter needs to be pulled off but will not come of unless the belt pulley is removed. I was just wondering if the belt pulley was an option that could be added in the factory. I wouldn't think they would make them with the starter in their that tight. This tractor also has an overdrive on it. Can anybody tell me how this works.
Thanks, Adam

Remove the belt pulley, it's the only way to get the starter out.. otherwise you'll break something on the starter... Over-drive gives you 4 speeds above 4th gear but slower than 5th. Sort of like a high-low auxillary transmission.

Mine pulls straight up and out. Not sure how a pulley would interfere with that. Perhaps, you cant get to the bottom bolt. -Greg

IH has always been notorious for building machines that aren't the easiest to work on. You should try to take the breather off an M, or worse yet, the radiator. If I remember correctly the carburator on the MD is pretty difficult to remove without taking the entire intake manifold off.
