I let a friend borrow my M and it now has a know in Reverse? ( He will to help fix it!) Anyway. It had stuck in two gears for me when I was mounting a loader on the tractor and I had really only used the tractor twice after that. My friend said it stuck in gears a couple of time for him. Any suggetions on what is wrong? Secondly it now has a knock where driving in reverse. What could this be?I hope I'm not getting involved over my head!

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance!

souds like your friend got it in two gears, horsed around and chipped a tooth off a gear. If the nois isn't too bad and you don't use the tractor much maybe leave well enough alone. The shifet problem is easy fix removing lever and building it up square again at the end. Any old IH guy will know what it is supposed to look like.

I don't know about the knock but the sticking in 2 gears is a trade mark of the old farmalls after they get some wear on the shifting lever. On many of the tractors the pin the lever pivots on gets worn. The cheap fix was to drill out the hole and put a bolt in it. Both my H and M have that and they work fine.

I suggest that you go thru the transmission and replace the bearings on the upper and lower shafts. My M had the pilot bearing go out on the upper shaft while I was plowing. Started as a slight knock and got much worse as I limped it back to the shop. These transmissions are fairly easy to work on. Two people makes alot easier because of the weight of the top cover. Some manuals say the tractor needs to be split. I supported the middle well and only split it about two inches (put longer bolts in to keep it all lined up) which allows the coupling between the clutch and the trans to wiggle out.

I broke a tooth or so off a transmission gear in an M when I was 14 or so. That made it knock in that gear.
