460 T/A is a slush box?

Is a torque amplifier dependent on hydraulic pressure to work properly or is it strictly mechanical with no fluid pressure actuating clutch packs?

Both my 460's T/A and hydraulic system are dying. It seems to me that as the performance of the hydraulic system keeps deteriorating, so does the T/A. Two years ago, the T/A worked OK and so did the hydraulics. Both seem to be in a downward lockstep with each other to the point now where the fast hitch won't lift a beer, and the T/A won't pull the pop tab off the can.

I've seen some rebuilt T/As available from dealers stating that some of these re-builds are mechanical sprague-type that replace the ramp and roller type. The implication here is that one is mechanical and the other is what?--hydraulic?

Dad rebuilt the T/A about five years ago. Plans are to dive headlong into the hydraulics and T/A this winter. If the T/A is indeed dependent on a functioning hydraulic system, then perhaps I don't need to split the 460 to make the T/A work again.

All T/A meisters chime in please. Thanks!

Dad bought a 350 new, and a couple of years later the TA started to slip a little. He talked to the dealer, who told him to change the Hay-Tran, That fixed it. he Hy-tran needed to be changed every year or two, regardless of the hours on it. Collects moisture and effects lubrication. Try changing the oil first.

You have a failing rollers & ramp in the low side of ta, hyd system- have you checked the cleanliness of Hytran, should be no fines or pieces of any kind, take the filter out and look at both Hytran & filter. Color of Hytran is important also, should be a clear caramel color. If Hytran has fines in it then its like a cutting mixture to the pumps.

Well, that settles that. Thanks for the input. Both problems must be entirely coincidental.

PS: the T/A works just fine in direct drive.

The only connection between the TA and hydraulics on your 460 is that the oil lubs the TA. Having said that is the TA going bad in direct drive as well the low side or just one or the other if the direct side maybe just TA clutch if low side the ramp and rollers going bad. will have to split the tractor. Adjustment and the way you use the TA is the big thing for long life. As for the hydraulics could be the pump or relief valve hard to say with out flow rating it to see what the pump is putting out, if had to pick I would say pump.

On a 460 the TA is totally mechanical and not at all associated with the hydraulics other than sharing the same oil. The sprag type TA is still mechanical but most people feel it is better than the ramp/roller setup. Sounds like the problems may be coincidental.
