I just got a 1940 H and I notcied that the crank for the engine doesn't line up with the bottom pulley so you couldn't crank it if you needed to. Is there an adjustment for this?Nothing appears bent however I didnt get to looking that hard yet.I just got it and I tuned it up plugs, cleaned and set points in mag and wire and I got it to purr. thanks Brad

I just looked at my 40 H today but forgot to post earlier-I hope you get this.

My H has a shaft through the front bolster that is always in place. There is some sort of u-joint under the radiator so the shaft can make a slight bend to mate up with the crankshaft pulley. I'm sorry, I couldn't get a good look at the joint, I've got a broken ankle and can't get around real good right now!!

Anyhow, the front of the shaft sticks out of the bolster about 3 inches and has a rollpin in the end of it. I don't have the crank handle, but I assume the handle fits over the shaft and engages with the roll pin. You would have to push in (toward grill) for the shaft to engage slots in crank pulley. Hope this makes sense, if not I can email a picture.

Have I misted some thing heer never new a Farmall to have rubber motor mounts. Your broblem is more likly to be the front bolster bolts came loose like many old tractors that had lock washers on the frame bolts and the bolster is out of line. Put in new grade 8 hard screw in the frame and leave the lock washers in the store where the belong. If hole in rail is over size use a grade 8 hard washer on the hard screw. All makes had thisproblem untill the left off the lock washers. Take a look at a new tractor like a 706 656 806 noe lock washers never had one come loose.

Justin is correct, I knew the frame rails were different, but did not know about the motor mounts (ignore my post below). My parts book indicates that the change occurred at SN 96813, or early 1942. I need to remember that when I start tearing down my 1941 H. I will keep your comment about the lock washers in mind. I currently have a Super H disassembled, don't remember if it had lock washers on the frame bolts or not. Will check during reassembly. A lot or those old bolts should be repalced anyway.

This is one of those problems where you can see why IH updated a part. Your tractor more than likely has the early engine mounts that are like those used on a car, two plates with rubber between to absorb vibration. Over time these will start to lose their srength, and the engine will begin to sag between the frame rails. If this is the case, you have two options:

1. replace the frame rails and engine mounts with those that are set up for the cast iron mounts. (framerails for the older mounts wont work with the newer mounts)

2. Take the mounts out, and have a professional welder remove the rubber, and install a block or plate to make the mounts sturdy. I have had this done to preserve the outward aspects of my 2 39 Hs, and also to allow me to start them both, as they are crank starts and I have experienced this problem.

There is no adjustment. Take off the grille, and perhaps you can find the problem. May be as simple as a misaligned grille.

I looked this morning and indeed it looks as they use side mounted rubber motor mounts. Can mounts be had? What part of the engine do you jack on to raise it back up once you have mounts or had a welder repiar old ones?If it doesn't get repaired right away and the tractor is used what else if anything is being damaged Thanks

I think I have a NOS set of mounts someplace, but after a couple years the same thing will happen.. A good welder will fix them right.
