Are there any precautions that need to be taken when hand cranking a tractor? I don't want to wind up with a broken arm.

I really think the best advice on hand cranking is DON'T DO IT unless it's absolutely necessary.

If you insist, go ahead - but, in addition to the other advice posted here, make sure your head is always out of reach of the crank's arc no matter which position the crank may spin through!

Alot of good advice so far. You may or may not have the lever or linkage for mag adjustment (might be missing). The mag has a cap over the points. This cap can be turned changing the spark. All the way up for shut down, all the way down for run, and part-way down to start (about 1/3 of the way down on mine to start). Your mag also has an impulse on it (that is what makes the click noise when handcranking). It only does this at real low RPM so you might here it again when you shut it off. Make sure you here that impulse making the click noise when hand cranking. Otherwise stand clear of crank, only pull up, and thumb and fingers on same side when cranking. And one more thing. Make sure you are still in a cranking motion when you here the impulse trip. That is when the mag fires the plug.

The archives have many good posts about safe cranking. Just do a search for "hand cranking" or "hand crank" and you should be able to find them. One person wrote step-by-step instructions. I should have read these BEFORE I got crank-whacked in the left arm real bad once trying to start my flooded F-20. Almost took my arm off. The most important precautions are to keep your thumb on the same side of the crank as your fingers, and pull the crank with one hand, not two. Pull up from the 6:00 position to the 12:00 position. Never crank downward. Where you stand can be important also.

don't forget to retard the magneto. then use quarter turns pulling up on the crank. Mine start on the first or second pull.

There should be a lever on the right side of the steering post where the steering wheel area is this lever goes to the mag, This lever will retard the spark for cranking

Always when cranking any tractor or any engine cup your hand keep your thumb on the same side with your fingers. This way if it kicks it will take the crank out of your hand without breaking your thumb,fingers,or arm.
