When I removed the gas tank from my H last spring, I found it clean inside except that when I turned it upside down a steel bolt 3/4 x2" came tumbling out. I didnt think about it much then, because I thought that maybe some kid had dropped it in there but after thinking about it (3 or 4 months), I was wondering if someone may have put it in there for a reason. Could it be that it was placed there as a sacrifice so that any rust would attack the bolt and not the gas tank.? Let me know if anyone has heard of this or done this.

I have heard mechanics tell what all they have found in various components of tractors and other equipment. Quite interesting, Last week i found the bottom portion of a plastic funnel in my 574. Knew of one fellow who found a ball peen hammer in the oil pan of an old McCormick Deering. Might make an interesting post.

When I got my M it had a long chisel. gas can cap a seal for the cap and part of a steel flex tube. Chisel comes in handy!

I'm more inclined to think it was the bolt one of the prior owners used to wedge the valve on the gas nozzel open with when gassing the tractor.... and possibly one time while replacing the gas cap with the bolt in the same hand and gas hose in the other the bolt fell into the tank.

Maybe someone thought that bolt rolling around in the tank would keep rust and debris from accumulating on the bottom of the tank. Or, it could have ended up in there accidentally and nobody bothered to fish it out. Most likely, it will always be a mystery!!

I'd bet Dr Evil is right - sounds exactly like what a farmer would do. Dick Davis

Not at all that bad. My sons mother-in-law just returned from the hospital. She couldnt figure out why she was having all this pain after her gall bladder operation a few months ago. Seems they left a sponge in the abdominal wall. Didnt want to dissolve or rust away???
