VOLTAGE CUT OUT

I was told that my h had a voltage cut out insted of a voltage regulator. what is the difference and how does it work. my light switch has 4 positions on it L,H,B,D. ANY HELP WILL BE AWSOME.

The cut-out is basically an early version of what became the voltage regulator. The cut out required the operator to control it by-way of the light switch. The L,H,B, and D stands for L- low charge, H- high charge, both of these settings is without lights. The D stands for dim lights and the B stands for bright lights. The system was with a 6V battery that was positive grounded. For the system to work it is really important that all electrical connections are clean and tight and rust free, and the generator is polarized to charge the right way (if not it will charge the battery down instead of up and will likely burn something up), also the lid to the box where the ampe guage is must be properly grounded as well and if not it won't work right. The light switch needs that lid that it is fastened to to be grounded. With alot of run time and little starting you should be able to just leave it on low charge most of the time. With little run time and alot of starting you will need to run it on high charge alot more. I ussually leave it on low charge untill I notice that the battery is getting a little weak while starting and then I will run it on high charge for awhile and then switch back to the low charge. The voltage regulator automatically adjustes the charge and does not need operator control or the 4-way light switch.

Bill gave an excellent discription of the operation of the cutout system. If your question is directed for troubleshooting, I will add my 2-cents.
The cutout is a relay. After the tractor starts, the contacts close and connect the generator to the battery. When the tractor is shut off, it opens. Obviously if it doesn't close, it won't charge and if it sticks closed it will discharge the battery.
The light switch controls the charge rate by controlling the generator field current. Grounding the field windings will produce maximum charge. This is why Bill mentioned the importance of grounding the instrument box. The light switch connects the generator field windings through a resistor to ground for "L" charge and directly to ground for "H" charge.

A voltage regulator has a set of "cutout" contacts and a second set of contacts to automatically control the generator field current (charge rate).
