Stud length on C113

All,

Just got a new set of studs for my C113 rebuild...spun 'em in to hand tight, dropped the head on, and found that I don't have enough length left to get a full set of nut threads on them. I could use an extra 1/2 inch of length. These are 5 1/4 inches long, and if I back them out far enough to work on the top end, I only have about 1/2 of thread in the block.

Naturally, the original studs are long gone, so I can't compare the new to the old. Does anyone know how long the studs should be? It looks to me like they really ought to be 5 1/2 or 5 3/4 inches...

Thanks,

- David

Dave,
I went and checked an old set I pulled out of a C113 and all but one are 5 1/4". One was 6 1/2". They were sitting in the same pile, no guarantee the long one was from that set though. Of the standard ones, the lower coarse thread section is about 3/4" long and the fine thread is about 1" long. The head I have access to at the moment is a later (230/240) style head but FWIW it's only 3 3/4" thick, so those studs should be fine. Are your new studs threaded deeper on the coarse end by chance? Maybe you are threading them deeper into the block than the original ones would go?

Stan,

AHA! I think you found it...the course threads on these new studs are almost an inch and a quarter...so they're threading down into the block deeper than they need to go. Hmmm...so maybe it's ok to just thread them in 3/4" or so.

In the meantime, my machine shop guy is checking into a replacement set that are a bit longer. I'll see what he comes up with.

Thanks for the measuring!

I checked the parts manual for my C. It just lists them as Stud, cylinder head. No dimensions. They are part number 24 433 D.

Randy,

Yep...did the same thing this morning...forgot to mention it. Not terribly helpful, eh? Thanks for checking though!
