OK, I'm sure some of you old farmers have better stories to tell than me, but in the total "bolt-off" restoration of my '41 H, I found this 2" treasure swimming at the bottom of the transmission chassis. I don't know what it is. Perhaps you could help identify it. It has a bevel edge in the center. Washed the chassis out with a gallon of mineral spirits, and this, along with about 4 ounces of miscellaneous metal fragments showed up. Sort of explains why the previous owner stated that "there was problems getting it into gear" and "the rear end had a noise, but not to worry."

Wired: My first reaction upon looking was it is seal, the type used on an axle. On closer look however it seems to be solid steel, right or wrong? 2" I presume is outside diameter, what would inside diameter be? I have in my lifetime at some point seen what you are showing us. Something to rack the memory section of my brain on today.

A thought just hit me, that being the possibility of a washer on the piston section of a hydraulic cylinder. Just how something like that would get in H tranny is another story. Sounds to me like someone was using the back of the H for a work bench while top was off transmission in the past.

Hugh,

I'll measure it and get the exact O.D. and I.D. on Wednesday (on the road today and tomorrow). And yep, it's steel. I'm guessing it's some type of washer, but from what?

From what I can tell, I was the first person to open the chassis plate since the crew in Rock Island put it on 62 years ago. The oil was probably original too. Surprisingly, the teeth on all the gears show little if any wear. Built to last.

There is one like it used on the front bolster, but would think it mite be larger. Goes under thrust bearing where shaft has a radius. Just a thought. But how did get in trans. Hmmmm

A lot of things can happen on an assembly line on Friday as guys are getting ready for a weekend, or Monday when they come back hungover and tired, even in 1941. I've found screw drivers and other tools under carpet in cars and there is alway the old Timex commercial about a guy who lost his watch in a tire and got it back when the customer came back for new ones.
