I have a relative that needs to rebuild a cylinder on a 2001 loader and was told by a dealer that it takes a speical tool to open the cylinder. he was told that the kit is only 50.00 but the labor would be over 400.00 that sounds high. thanks for your time Bill

Bent the piston rod on one of those once. Dealer price for a new one was out of this world. Took it to a cylinder repair shop and they tore it apart, made a new piston rod, put in new seals and assembled. Was under $200.00 which was under 1/2 price of a new one. Generally these shops would be found in larger cities. I went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They had 4 or 5 guys just rebuilding cylinders. Took it in one day and got it back the next. I saw the cylinder come apart but can't remember how. Seems like some internal snapring was used.

I work at a farm equipment dealer in MN and with our shop rate that would be over 6 hrs. Now I think also that the quote they gave was a little high. Were they inclkuding in the 400$ the parts also? I would say that in 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hrs you should be able to get one cylinder done. I would not buy a replacement cylinder unless it is a C-IH replacement. There are dozens of ways that cylinders are assembled and so for me to try to help you get it apart is hard unless you can give me some details as to the end with the rod coming through it. Is there a big nut or a snap ring or a rubber plug on the side of the barrel just below the end? See what you find but the bottom line is that the dealer should be able to rebiuld one for less that $400.

I believe my local case dealer was talking $200 to do cylinders and I think of them as chargin to much for everything... Seems like for $450 you could buy a brand new cylinder. -Greg

I took a quick look at the cylinder last night but didn"t see how the end seal or packing was kept in, I didnt see any snap rings and the end of the cylinder doesn"t appear to unthread. the cylinder isnt bent, its just starting to leak after all these years.Has anybody had one of these apart? thanks Bill

The end of the cylinder should come off. If you have a big pipe wrench, that might do it. Others might need a spanner wrench, like there should be some small holes for the tool to go in. They are threaded on the inside of the cylinder. -Greg

Sounds kind of rich to me too! Have him check into a local hydraulics repair shop. They probably have the tools to do the job and will stand behind their work for a time.//FB
