Greetings All,
Thinking of bidding on a nice IH 686 at auction. What is the HP rating of this model, as well as its' "reputation" in terms of a reliable workhorse--I've seen several discussion threads on the 656. How does the 686 compare? Thanks to all who respond. Steve in WI

Stephen: 686 was the last of a line of tractor that were the most efficient tractors ever built. Efficient in that they could also do light work efficiently. I call these tractors an M with comfort although some people don't share that opinion. It all started with the Farmall MD in 1940, when tested at Nebraska it was declared to be the most fuel efficient tractor ever tested. From there on it only got better, and yes what you get in the 656, 666 and 686 is the solid reputation of the old M with modern day technology and much added horse power. My 656 diesel was truly the most efficient per horse power of the 16 different Farmalls I farmed with over the years. A friend of mine who bought a new 666 told me the 666 and 686 being a bit sharper on the hp than 656 did loose a wee bit on the fuel effeciency. Look at it this way, you don't have to fool with the glow plugs anymore, We felt the same way about the gas start M when the 560 and 656 came along with their glow plugs. Just an evolution of something good.

It's right around 65 horsepower. The only difference between a 656, 666, and 686 is the engines each one could have. 656 could have a C-263 gas or a D-282 diesel. 666 could have a C-291 gas or a D-312 diesel. 686 could have a C-291 gas, a D-312 diesel or a D-310 German diesel. The easy way to tell the difference between a D-312 and a D-310 is that the D-310 has one horizontally mounted oil filter, while the D-312 has two vertically mounted oil filters. Other than that, the only differences between a late 656 and a 686 are the grill, paint job, and decals. We had a 686 with the D-310 for about 6 years. It was a very good all-around workhorse, very reliable. The only problem is that the D-310 engine is very cold-blooded, will not start without the block heater once it gets below 40 degrees. We'd probably still have the 686, but a the nicest, low-houred 3088 I've ever seen came along earlier this summer, and we traded the 686 for it. The 686 had around 6600 hours on it, and never needed any major work while we had it, I know the original owners, and they say it had a bunch of trouble with the shift linkage once.

My father bought a 686 new with a German 310 diesel in it. What a gutsy little motor, it seemed like it never ran out of power. In my eyes it was a very nice, handy tractor.

The 686 gas is a C291 65 pto hp, could have a D310 at 66 pto hp, or a D312 at 65 pto hp. The D310 is a german engine and the D312 is part of the 300 400 series engine group.

the 686 tractor was built starting in 1976 and ended production in 1980. this tractor has the d-310 engine it has the same rear end and tranc as the 656. the engine was a smaller verision of the 400 series used in the 66 and 86 series tractors it's a very good engine. the average shipping weight on this tractor is 7800 lbs. good luck with your purchase.

I saw somewhere on this board a 656 which is extremely similar to a 686 is just a comfortable "M".

Early 686's had the d-312 which was a smaller version of the 414-436-466. The later 686 had the german engine.

656-666-686 are basically the same tractor frame except that the rear end of the 686 was stregthened internally. Yes M wheels will fit on the hubs.

You can think of a 656 or 686 as a more The comftorable M, but is more capable also.

I pull a 3-16 rollover with my 686 where as my dad's m would pull a 2-16 draw plow.

686 is a great tractor
