I have traced a pretty good front end wobble to the Charlin power steering unit on an M. The input shaft is steady the output has a pronounced right then left twist which results in the wobble Can the unit be rebuilt? Anybody have any experience inside one of these? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Dick Davis

Eaton Hydraulics is still building and selling Charlynn power steering systems, and they look alot the same (for whatever that's worth).

Maybe you can find a local distributor on the Eaton website for parts?

Dick - Does the Charlyn output shaft have slop when the engine is running? The one on my SM has about 30 deg of rotation with the engine stopped, but the slop disappears the instant the motor is started. Turned out the front end wobble on mine was the result of the usual Farmall worn pivot shaft bushing and steering box gears, not the Charlyn motor

Yup, Bob M, the slop is when the engine is running! I checked it out and was hoping it was the normal wear in knuckles and bearings. Unfortunately with the hood removed and running down the road the output shaft would pulse with the input shaft steady. During a turn the output would steady up but after the turn, running straight ahead, the wobble returned. Thanks for the thought. Dick

Usually the swivel joint is where all the play is at. I know John Day company has some parts available. Happy hunting Tim K.

Can't help much with how to work on those things but can tell you for sure to mark the side of the unit so that you get everything put back together in the same way that it came apart. I found out that if you don't get the alignment of the pieces right, the steering wheel will take off to one direction or the other when you start the tractor.
