What's the best loader to put on a Farmall H? It would just be for light duty and lifting on a small 5-acre place. I've seen several styles and I would kind of like to stay vintage because I think those might be less expensive? Should a person run it on the tractor hydraulic or run a pump on the pto? Opinions, advice and experience please. Thanks!

I have a 42 H with an old McCormick IH 33-A Power Loader I installed. It's the pipe style loader that curves at the front for use with a wide front end. Has a lot of flex when moving logs and such with the weight on one side or the other, but no problems yet. Trip bucket too. Works good and am happy with it for the money.

Look for a Du-All 250 Loader with a pto pump. They are common loaders that fit H's and M's. The loader is all hydraulic, which makes it a lot more usefull around the farm.. Good ones go for about $400-$800.

I have a Farmhand loader on my H. Not sure what model but it is the old style that mounts to the draw-bar/axel/and front end and goes all the way around the tractor and has the p.t.o. driven hydraulic pump. It can lift alot of weight if the loader is in good mechanical shape and probably raises higher than other loaders for the H. It also has a 4-way valve control for up and down and bucket tilt. It lowers by gravity though. The more weight the faster it lowers but somewhat better than the trip bucket. The same loader fits on the M. The M handles it better because of more power and the extra tractor size. A couple negatives on this loader is that it is bulky and probably makes the tractor a little more unstable than other styles of loaders and the bucket is actuated with cables that run clear back to the back of loader that run through a pulley on a cylinder. The trouble is with the cables (they come back on each side of the driver outward and a little upward of drivers shoulders) if they break with a load on they could snap back causing a danger to the driver. It takes a little more safety to operate this loader but I sure like it on my H.

The McCormick #31 is the loader which was designed for these tractors, they are tough as nails and very simple. Don't plan on putting it on, or taking it off in just a few minutes though. Most farmers would put it on and just leave it there. Also, will not work with a wide front end.
I believe there is one for sale in the photo ads right now.

What does a #31 look like? Are they the ones that appear to made from "pipe" and with a curved frame so they can be used with a wide front end?

The #31 is a straight loader, the main frame is made of channel iron, this loader attaches to the rear axle housings, and also to the frame rails towards the front. There is another piece which attaches to the front bolster of the tractor, and acts as a guide to limit side sway.It will not fit a wide front tractor.
Look in the photo ads, under loader for Farmall H, a pretty good picture.

the loader made of pipe curved to fit a widefront tractor was probably a new idea horn loader. they came with both straight and curved frame models. this is the caddilac of the trip bucket loaders. it will lift up real high where a lot of the old loaders would only lift about seven feet high.

That is what I put on my 350. I could have sworn it was an IH loader though. Pull 4 pins and the loader comes off leaving a frame that bolts over the rear axles and to the frame rails. Single action cylinders with a trip bucket, all I need on a 80 acre hobby farm.

I just took an original loader off of my grandfather's 41 H that I have no use for since I'm using the tractor as a show tractor. Contact me at bkruse@fmo.com if interested.
