My 40 model serial #17495 has a seat I have never seen before. There is a small spring with a notched adjustment assembly mounted around it that allows the seat to be adjusted up or down. it is original not a fabrication. I have seen every type you all have mentioned (monroe, small spring and large spring with shock.) but I have never seen another one like this.

What you have described is what was called a "floating seat" It had several notched positions that could be adjusted according to the weight of the operator. You could use the original equipment pan seat, or install the square cushion seat with a metal back that the "Floating seat" folks made available, on the seat frame. This was definitely an after market seat, but at the same time dedicated to different tractor mounting configurations. The Monroe seat with the shock absorber behind the spring predated the ones with the shock absorber in front of the spring. I'm not just sure when the later models came out, but it seems to me that it was around 1948 or 1949. The original seat with the spring in front, and round tube frame with the attached tool box was available from 1940 till he under the seat battery box was added for the super models

For the H, I assume the M was similar, the original seat was used from 501--15697, or until early in 1940. This seat had the smaller spring, but was a little different from the small-spring seat that followed. My parts book indicates that the "late" small-spring seat and the large-spring hydraulic seat were offered from 15697--up. That does not necessarily mean that the hydraulic seat was actually available when SN 15968 was built, just that the seat was available as a retrofit. I have always assumed that the small-spring seat was on most of the early-mid 40's tractors, and the hydraulic seat on most of the late 40's early 50's tractors. So, after all that I can't give you a definitive answer, except to say that both seats were offered for several years, and that there probably was no changeover, just that the small spring was phased out.

I think starting in 1940 the deluxe seat (with the shock and spring under the seat) was available as an option. Most later H's came with the deluxe seat, but I believe the original style seat was available for the entire production run of the H.

I like your version better. And, there was also the "Monroe" seat with the large shock behind, rather than in front of the spring.
