What was used originally in the hydraulic system on a 54 SH w/live hyd.?
30 weight oil? The lift-alls required 30 wt. non detergent (to prevent foaming) engine oil,But I have Live Hyd.,not a Lift-All.
When I got this one it had Hydraulic Fluid in it-not engine oil.Would it pick up more with the engine oil or does it make a difference?
Thoughts Please!
This spring it wouldn't pick up my 400 Cyclo 4 row when loaded w/Fert.and seed.
Thanks
HB

go to a larger dia cycl the H will lift if you have a large enough dia cycl.

I'd try using a hyd. cyl. on the planter maybe 1/2" larger in dia. You have plenty of oil cap. to run even a 4" dia. X 16" stroke 2-way cyl.

Yeah, them older IH's don't like small Cylinders..... ....Not enough pressure. We have huge cylinders on everything of ours..... .They put the flow out but lack in the pressure department.

TP - The cylinders were big enough for 2-row equip. before the days of insecticide, herbicide, etc. etc. ;-) You can only do so much with 800-900 PSI. I checked the pressure on the live pump on My Super H and all I got at about 1200 RPM was 850 psi cold.

The oil you use will not change a thing on lifting capacity. Having said that your system should lift the 4 row cyclo full of seed and fertilizer. In fact it should play with it. I used to plant some with my 300 and same planter, same pump although persure relief and other valves may be different. What I have seen of these tractors back when they were new is Super H's in fact all H's had an edge on the 300, for lifting capacity. It sounds as though your pump may not be right up to snuff.

The single biggest reason I planted most of time with 656 was power. Comfort and manuverability were also quite large factors. My 300 had seen better days when I bought the cyclo planter in 1975, and I found it just a bit lacking on power even on level ground. On the hydraulics end I actually liked it better than 656. I shouldn't knock the 300 too hard on the power end either as it did run the planter, but was at it's limit most of time.
