Went to do some mowing with the straight M and IH rotary mower. It shifts in and out of gear fine with the pto disengaged, but when the pto is on, it's like the clutch won't disengage power from the engine. It shifts hard and grinds even with the pedal all the way down. Is this something simple to fix or major troubles? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I guess I didn't pay attention to see if the mower was still turning. It stands to reason that if it was, it would continue to drive the transmission even if the clutch was pushed down. I should have thought of that, but didn't. Thanks again.

These old tractors do not have live pto. It the mower is turning then the gears on the rear end side of the transmission are spinning. You would need to let the mower stop completely before putting the transmission in gear. If you have everything stopped then you have other problems.

You need to use an over-running coupler on your PTO driveshaft. Without it, the momentum of the spinning mower blades will cause the transmission gears to continue turning. You should be able to find one at your local farm store or CIH dealer for about $50-60.
