my radiator looks good, on the outside and from what i can see inside, it looks good too.

here's the delimea, it's a '40 model. what should i do? can i trust it being that old?
will a radiator shop clean it for me (flush)? is there some sort of pressure test to check for leaks?

what would you do with a 63 year old radiator?

That old radiator might be better than a new one! the new ones are way too thin and are prone to cracks. If the old one doesn't leak, just drain it and fill it with DISTILLED WATER and run it for a few hours, get the water good and hot. Drain it before it cools, and refill with distilled water and antifreeze mix. If you change it every year and use only distilled water or rain water for that matter, it will clean itself out! Well water over the years will build up scale both on the cylinder walls in the water jacket , the head, and the radiator.

I did forget to add, when you drain it when warm, let it cool while empty before adding the new distilled water, don't need any cracked heads. Might even let it sit for 20 min before draining, BUT as the water cools it will redeposit scale, so be sure it is about 120-150 degrees when you drain it out.

I had overfilled a Farmall C and spilled gas on the starter.

Having been reckless and lucky before, I tried to start it without washing the gas off. The spark in the starter contact initiated a flame which grew up the side of the tractor.

I grabbed my fire extinguisher and quickly started extinguishing the fire, from the bottom, and broke the sediment bowl when the propellant hit it. The ensuing gas and hot metal were too much for the extinguisher and I did not have a hose long enough to reach. I was able to roll the tractor away from the wooden barn before the tires caught on fire. I finally got enough hose strung together to put out the back tires but the tractor and model 100 wobble head belly mower were severly damaged and never repaired.

I have a 1940 H, with the original radiator, it gets regular use through the summer, mowing season, never had a problem.

I'd likely just flush it out good and never give it another thought. Those were well built rads and last forever.
